In 2007, the Urban Planning and Development Institute of the City of Pilsen started to prepare a comprehensive study on the revitalisation of Pilsen's river banks. The unique urban plan to establish a city on the banks of four rivers – the Mže, Radbuza, Úhlava and Úslava – offers residents of Pilsen excellent potential for everyday recreation and relaxation. Yet still much work remains until every kilometre of Pilsen's watercourses will truly offer an aesthetic experience or be an enjoyable venue for sports and relaxation.
The study proposal includes a system of rest areas and information signs connected with sports and recreational paths in the river valleys (bicycle trails, footpaths, educational nature trails and horse trails). The nature and landscape section of the study will focus on a comprehensive view of flood prevention measures, featuring different approaches to various sections of the watercourses and flood plains with regards to zone and function, measures in terms of using the active and passive zones of food areas, protecting valuable natural and cultural sites in the landscape and renewing areas where the ecosystem is out of balance, increasing biodiversity and improving the aesthetics of the city's watercourses.
With this project, the city of Pilsen has joined the international REURIS project as part of the Operational Programme Transnational Cooperation. This involved collaboration between the Czech Republic (Pilsen and Brno), Poland (Katovice, Bydgoszcz) and Germany (Stuttgart and Leipzig).
